Superstars Founder Steve Hutson Offers Advice On When To Leave Your Job
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 9 July 2013 -- Steve Hutson, founder of innovative staffing company Superstars, returned to Colourful Radio this week to appear on Colourful Life with Jacqueline "Jaxx" Shepherd. This time, Jaxx and Steve talked about one of a question most people will ask themselves during their career – “when should I leave my job?”
Steve explained that most people who are dissatisfied with their role usually think about leaving at either the three month mark or three years into working a job, something Jaxx dubbed the “3-month itch or the 3-year itch.”
“In the 1st three months you might not feel your skills are up to it, this is not the right job, or the manager is hard to get on with and you don't feel part of that community,” said Steve.
“The 3 year itch is when you have plateaued in your career and you are doing the same old thing all the time. You are bored and unhappy and nobody seems to be talking to you and there is a discrepancy between where you feel you are and where your employer seems to think you are.”
Jaxx wanted to know if people should be reluctant to leave a role because of fears about unemployment or the state of the job market. Steve acknowledged these fears, but felt that was not always a valid reason to stay.
“You shouldn't let fear influence you. It's about what you are feeling at the time and identifying where you are financially and in terms of skills. Unemployment is always going to be there.”
An equally important question is: “When shouldn’t I leave?” Steve has some advice there too.
“Never just walk out of a job unless there is something really dramatic going on. You might be angry or frustrated but just go away and really think about it for 24 hours before making a decision.
“Whenever I meet people for interviews the first question I ask is 'do you really want to leave?' and I do a sort of counselling session just to get it out of their system because we don't want them venting in another interview situation. In at least 50 per cent of situations it turns out to be emotional - it's a line manager or a colleague. Once we get through that emotion then quite a few go back and speak to their employer and work things out for the better.”
To help decide a next move, Steve has a simple exercise that he recommends to all Superstars Talent.
“It’s what I call the 'Stevie List’,” he explained. “Find a quiet place, sit down and write out three lists: LOVE, HATE and GOALS.
“For the first one, write down what you love about your job for the last few months or years. Next, do the same for what you hate about your job. Then, ask yourself this question - 'Where do I want to be next?' and write that down under GOALS.
“When you love something you often can't see exactly what it is that you love and when you hate something you often bury your head in the sand about it. This is a really good exercise because it allows you to pull out what you are thinking and feeling.”
Whatever the outcome of this exercise, it is important to get the right advice.
"What we need to do is understand where we are and then build a platform. At Superstars we help people build those platforms to get where they want to go."
