When paving in hot weather, Bradshaw notes, time becomes less of an issue, as the high temperatures allow the asphalt to remain stable and easy to compact. Paving driveways or pathways in cold weather is when efficiency becomes an issue, because there’s a shorter period of time allotted to compact the asphalt; it’s important for the contractor to work quickly for the best results.
“The weather becomes even more of a factor if the homeowner or client resides in a rural area a distance from the asphalt plant. Contractors must take proactive approaches to not allow the asphalt to cool too much, which becomes more difficult in colder weather,” he adds. “If at all possible, it is advised that homeowners living in rural communities try to do their asphalt paving during the spring or summer months. This avoids situations where it becomes difficult to keep the asphalt at the necessary temperature for long commutes.”
