Surgery Addressing an Alabama Youth’s Jaw Deformity Underlines the Less Well Known Side of Plastic Surgery

Dr. J notes that, when most people think of plastic surgery, they consider operations such as breast augmentations and liposuctions, as well as many other procedures that are often received by people who want to attract more positive attention with their improved looks. Dr. J notes, however that, particularly with younger patients, a great many procedures are actually obtained simply to fit in and also, very often, to be more physically comfortable. The most commonly obtained procedures of this type, include:
• Breast reduction. While such celebrities as actress Ariel Winter, Roseanne Barr, and Queen Latifah have undergone this procedure, it’s typically obtained for two reasons that have nothing to do with wanting to capture public attention, notes Dr. J. First, particularly in the case of younger patients like Ms. Winter, it’s actually often intended to reduce unwanted attention that may result from having much larger than average sized breasts. Secondly, very large breasts can lead to physical problems such as painful backaches due to excessive strain. Some patients, Dr. J notes, also receive these procedures to allow them to participate in favorite athletic activities where very large breasts can be a hindrance.
• Rhinoplasty (nose jobs). While these procedures have received their share of the limelight, Dr. J notes that many patients receive them as much to deal with such issues as deviated septums as for any aesthetic improvement. Also, in the case of patients with abnormally large noses, particularly younger patients, a procedure of this type is more a matter of avoiding negative attention than trying to look unusually good, the doctor adds.
• Ear pinning (otoplasty). Parents of children with ears that are relatively far away from their heads are often concerned about the possibility of bullying that might be inspired by an appearance that other children might find unusual. Dr. J notes that surgeries which bring the ear closer to the head have been extremely effective in terms of removing this stigma safely and easily.
