Surviving a Stroke: Know Best Place for Care Before Crisis Strikes
Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) April 25, 2017 -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women account for nearly 60% of stroke deaths, a “brain attack” that kills twice as many women as breast cancer. Even more alarming, the percentage of strokes in women under age 45 is increasing, with studies showing these women are more likely to be misdiagnosed. Understanding the criticality of time and effective care for stroke patients, the Women’s Choice Award is urging women to get to know the best hospitals for stroke care in their communities before a crisis occurs by releasing the list of America’s Best Stroke Centers for 2017 during May’s National Stroke Awareness Month.
In a recent survey, the Women’s Choice Award found that over 65% of women cannot name the best hospitals for stroke care in their communities.
“The time to identify your community’s leading hospital for stroke care is right now, not in the middle of a medical emergency when every minute is precious,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “Getting top care within the first three hours of a stroke is critical to preventing disability and improving chances of recovery.”
To be considered for the America’s Best Stroke Centers award, a facility must first be certified by the Joint Commission’s Stroke Certification Program as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and/or Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center. It is the only award recognizing excellence in stroke care based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
The methodology used to select the centers is unique in that it evaluates 30-day stroke mortality and readmission rates and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results. Hospitals must also score in the top 80% of all hospitals in the following areas:
- Percent of patients receiving head CT scan results within 45 minutes
- Percent of patients receiving thrombolytic therapy
- Percent of patients receiving stroke education
“The hospitals we have awarded are top performers for delivering timely care and treatment in an urgent medical situation,” said Passi. “These are the stroke care hospitals that could save your life.”
