Surviving Mesothelioma Report: New Data Suggests That Multimodal Mesothelioma Treatment Can Be Effective, Even in Low-Volume Centers
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) December 11, 2015 -- An Italian medical center treating mesothelioma patients with pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) and heated intraoperative chemotherapy (HITHOC) is showing good outcomes and doctors there say it’s good news for patients and small centers like theirs. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the new research study. Click here to read it now.
Researchers at Policlinico Hospital in Catania, Italy conducted a small study on six of their mesothelioma patients treated with P/D surgery and HITHOC. Study author Marcello Migliore says the results confirm the effectiveness of the protocol.
“This small experience confirms that pleurectomy/decortication and HITHOC are a good therapeutic option in the multimodality treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma,” writes Dr. Migliore.
In contrast to previous studies suggesting that the P/D and HITHOC procedures should only be done in high volume centers, the new article in Future Oncology reports no deaths from the procedure and a mean mesothelioma survival of 21.5 months.
“If these results can be verified in larger studies, it is potentially very good news for pleural mesothelioma patients who do not live near a major medical center,” says Surviving Mesothelioma’s Managing Editor, Alex Strauss.
