Susan Higgins Turns Spotlight to Opera Star in New Book
London, England (PRWEB) February 10, 2014 -- “Conversations with Ann Howard” (published by AuthorHouse) by author Susan Higgins, tells the story of Ann Howard’s life, pieced together through a series of interviews and referencing her diaries and the reviews in the press of her many appearances as the leading mezzo-soprano of her generation.
Born and educated in South London, Howard’s first singing experiences were as an enthusiastic amateur. She was then dramatically “discovered” by a London impresario. Her first professional appearances were in pantomime, but further good fortune led her to train in Paris and enter the world of opera.
Howard’s career spanned the years when opera in Britain was gaining in popularity with the emergence of the English National Opera and with the staging of epic productions, notably Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” in which she had a prominent role. Her portrayal of Bizet’s Carmen set a new bench mark for this famous operatic character, which she performed over 250 times throughout the world.
Higgins first saw Howard on stage performing the role of Delilah in Saint-Saëns’ opera “Samson and Delilah.” Higgins was inspired by this performance as she, herself, was an aspiring singer. Years later she realized an ambition to interview Howard to discuss her career and learn of her life as an opera diva. The result was ‘Conversations with Ann Howard’, her debut biography.
