Suunto Ambit 2S and Garmin Distance Accuracy Better Than Phones Says HRWC
Bozeman, MT (PRWEB) October 10, 2013 -- Suunto Ambit 2S and Garmin GPS products are much more accurate than phones for distance, pace and mapping data according to recent tests conducted by the Heart Rate Watch Company.
"A lot of people these days are using Smartphones in lieu of GPS watches but the main GPS watch products from Garmin, Suunto, TomTom and Timex are much more accurate," says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "We've proved it in real parallel tests and there is no question."
THE TEST
"I used my Suunto Ambit 2 and my daughter used her Garmin Forerunner 10 on a 3.55 mile course," says Squire. He adds, "First, we wheel measured it with the same equipment highway crews use and it came out to 3.55, then we walked it together."
THE EQUIPMENT
"I used my Suunto Ambit 2 and my iPhone with a popular app for walking, while my daughter used her Garmin Forerunner 10," says Squire. "As you can see from the summary photos we attached, the Suunto Ambit 2 came out at 3.54 miles, while the Garmin Forerunner 10 came out at 3.53 miles."
"The iPhone came out at 3.31, an astounding two-tenths of a mile off, whereas the Garmin and the Suunto were only one to two one-hundredths of a mile off," says Squire. He adds, "What this proved to us is that the modern GPS watches are quite accurate while Smartphone are not and these errors would likely increase with increased distance."
"The bottomline is that you can have the best app in the world but if the hardware isn't accurate, who cares?" says Squire.
WHY?
"The GPS hardware in phones does not employ the same quality of equipment, nor does it have the same sensitivity," says Squire. He adds, "Phones are made for voice and data accuracy, their primary purpose never was fitness accuracy and they don't have the room for the hardware to accommodate this purpose and meet their primary purpose."
"Is that a shocker, I don't think so, we've been saying this for years," says Squire. He adds, "For more recreational users that don't care about accuracy, it may be fine to use your phone but once you get a bit more serious accuracy and convenience of use is much higher with a watch."
