Instead, fillers are subdivided into hyaluronic acid (including Juvederm and Restylane), calcium hydroxyapatite (including Radiesse), and poly L-lactic acid (including Sculptra), each offering its own advantages depending on the patient’s individualized needs.”
Suzanne notes that hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are made of a molecule that is naturally found in the human body. Because it can be injected almost anywhere and can be easily reversible, it is a great option for first-time users. She explains that Juvederm is an example of this type of hyaluronic acid filler, but even it is subdivided into categories. Juvederm Ultra XC, for example, is injected higher in the dermis while Juvederm Ultra Plus XC in injected deeper. Both versions are very effective at reducing the look of wrinkles and folds. However, clinical studies found that Juvederm Ultra Plus held up a little better over time. Juvederm Voluma XC, another version, is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface, lifting and contouring the cheek area specifically, giving a more youthful appearance. It is injected deep in the cheek area.
Like Juvederm, Restylane is found in the hyaluronic acid family and can be subdivided into different versions: Perlane, Restylane Lyft and Restylane Silk. Restylane Lyft, for example, is specifically used for severe facial wrinkles and folds, while Silk is specifically geared towards plumping lips and reducing wrinkles around the mouth with a natural look. Sculptra, which is found in the poly L-lactic acid category, is considered a “collagen stimulator” which works gradually over a series of treatments.
