Hanekom, M.D., FACP, CMPE, as Chief Medical Officer of the company. Dr. Hanekom joins SPH with thirty years’ experience in healthcare, healthcare IT and analytics.

Dr. Hanekom is well regarded for his efforts in the development of novel approaches assisting payers and providers better manage their patient populations, improve quality of care and reduce costs. Dr. Hanekom has served as the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Management of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, where he supervised a spectrum of medical management activities, including utilization review, case management, mental health services, chiropractic services, medical policy, pharmacy, wellness, quality assurance, referral management and health informatics. Hanekom joined BCBSND in 2007 as a medical director in Medical Management. Dr. Hanekom designed and implemented the nationally acclaimed MediQHome Quality Program in North Dakota.
Prior to Dr. Hanekom’s joining Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, he served as an internal medicine physician at Sanford Southpointe Clinic in Fargo, where he was involved in ambulatory and hospital-based internal medicine. He also practiced palliative care in the Palliative Care Unit at Sanford South University, and was Director of Chronic Disease with a focus on ambulatory diabetes care throughout the health system. He earned his medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand medical school and received post-graduate training in family medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa and in internal medicine at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
