Synthetic Drugs Infiltrate Broward County, Flakka Causes 16 Confirmed Deaths
Miami, FL (PRWEB) June 24, 2015 -- According to the Washington Post, on June 22nd, flakka has been the cause of 16 deaths since last September in Broward County. Flakka is the street name of Alpha-PVP, which induces heightened delirium in those who abuse the addictive substance. The sale of flakka is made possible by online wholesalers who sell the substance from China at discounted rates, according to the Washington Post. A Broward County hospital reported seeing 20 flakka related cases come into their facility in the course of a single day. Harbor Village Detox reports having more clients coming in reeling from the effects of the drug. Harbor Village Detox is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility nestled in South Florida’s Miami. The addiction specialists of the treatment facility urge those experimenting with, or who are addicted to, flakka to seek immediate treatment due to the negative physical impact the drug induces.
According to the DEA, as reported by the Washington Post, flakka is among one of many addictive substances produced in China and sold online. The Washington Post quotes Broward County Sheriff’s Detective William Schwartz, “We’re talking thousands of labs in China. They’re everywhere, and it’s very common over there, and the exportation laws leave a lot to be desired as far as law enforcement in the United States is concerned.”
An associate of Harbor Village Detox comments,
“It’s almost impossible to miss the signs of flakka, and it’s becoming so common in the Broward and Dade area, Broward has assembled a flakka task force to help combat the drug on the streets. Unfortunately they’re not able to eliminate all the sources, and we become the first line of defense for public health. Those who come in for detox exhibit signs every similar to opiate withdrawal.
“Flakka appears to be almost as addictive as heroin or cocaine- and because it is so readily available cheaply on the streets young adults and the homeless are particularly at risk for exposure and experimentation, [of and for flakka].”
