(PRWEB) October 18, 2014 -- Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo are a two-time winning Emmy choreography duo on So You Think You Can Dance and artistic directors/choreographers for American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, The Sing Off, and a slew of other reality performance shows. They have also choreographed for the Emmys, AMA’s, MTV Music Awards, Cirque Du Soleil, Madonna’s Superbowl Half-time show, and various other artists. This week Napoleon and Tabitha, also known as “NappyTabs,” appeared on Maria Menounos’ “aftershow” network, AfterBuzz TV, for “Spotlight On” where host Alikona Bradford interviewed them to give an intimate peak into their journey to success.
Though in the “biz” for years, Napoleon and Tabitha first gained public recognition on the hit dance show, So You Think You Can Dance. “I think being on the show [SYTYCD] was definitely a launching pad for us to take it to the next level as choreographers. For most of the time we're behind the scenes; no one knows who created the steps or where they come from ...and because of the show now they do,” said Tabitha. When asked about their title as “creators” of lyrical Hip-Hop she replied that the show “gave us an outlet to showcase that [type of movement] and we were very excited at the time to show a different side of Hip Hop because we felt like America was only seeing one side of hip hop and...stereotyping it.”
The humble couple reminisce about their first Emmy, and Napoleon shares, “The first time we won, actually, we didn't expect it. I just said ‘ehhh nobody's gonna pick that over all these amazing pieces that are nominated’ and we went up there, had nothing prepared, kissed a lot and kept saying we love each other...” He chuckles as Tabitha pipes in, "I wanted to say 'I can't believe this sh*t's happening!'"
Before they took dance serious as a career, Napoleon served in the Army in Germany, “I was a little bad in high school and my dad was a Navy guy for 21 years and said ‘son you gotta go in the armed services.’ I ended up going into the army and it was the best thing for me. ...it just taught me a different way to look at life, appreciate life, and hard work and how hard work pays off.” He later attended the University of Nevada Las Vegas majoring in Molecular Biology where he met his soon to be wife, Tabitha Cortopassi, a Communications major and cheerleader. She laughed and said that during college, “I was Rio Rita; I used to walk around in college as the mascot for the Rio Hotel and Casino. I would wear fruit on my head in Carmen Miranda and say (accent) wellllllcome to the Rio! But I have come a long way.”
When asked about their romance Tabitha admitted to her immediate attraction, but hesitated to give her future soulmate a shot, “...when he started to pursue me I was interested in it, but I DID play hard to get cause I felt like he woulda broke my heart....and I made him work hard.” According to Napoleon, “I wouldn’t be dancing if it weren’t for her.”
Both attribute their courage to leave behind their solid careers in medicine and PR to international Hip-Hop company Culture Shock, which they joined in college. “This was the first hip hop dance company, big dance company, in the country and... It was the best thing ever,” said Napoleon.
