According to the Associated Press, the Takata airbag recall has affected at least 12 million vehicles worldwide. If the airbags are deployed, the inflator can rupture, sending shrapnel into the air that can seriously injure vehicle occupants. At least four deaths in U.S. auto accidents have been tied to defective Takata airbags.

Reuters has reported that Takata is now being targeted in an investigation launched by U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. While federal prosecutors have not yet accused the company of any wrongdoing, they are trying to determine if the Japanese company misled U.S. regulators about the number of defective air bags it sold to automakers.

According to court documents, a number of Takata airbag lawsuits are already pending in U.S. courts that involve allegedly defective airbags. Most recently, one such complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, on behalf of a South Florida woman who claims an exploding Takata airbag was the cause of serious head injuries she sustained in a car accident that occurred while she was driving her 2001 Honda Civic. As a result of her injuries, the plaintiff says she was forced to miss 20 days of work, and continues to suffer from headaches, nausea, vision problems, and issues with her sense of smell. Her lawsuit accuses Takata of failing to properly design, test, and manufacturer its airbag unit. Honda is also named a defendant in the complaint.
