Talking Brains Initiative Founder Edward Devitt II Takes Part in Two Events Marking Brain Injury Advocacy Day

The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) established its first-ever Brain Injury Advocacy Day in 2016, in response to the lack of information surrounding this all-too-frequently stigmatized and misunderstood condition. Although not a medical professional, Edward Devitt II, founder of nonprofit group Talking Brains Initiative, feels he has much to contribute to the discussion. He suffered severe brain trauma as the result of a car accident at age eighteen, overcame years of depression and addiction, and now, at thirty-six year old, leads a normal, productive life with virtually no residual cognitive impairment.
It’s the first-hand experience aspect that he finds sometimes lacking in the conversation, and one he directly addresses on March 6, 2017, at two separate Advocacy Day events taking place in New York State. In the morning, he travels to Albany, to join the rally being held at the Legislative Office Building. Following that, he meets privately with New York State Assemblyperson Aileen M. Gunther and State Senator Bill Larkin. He then heads an hour and a half south to Orange County Community College in Newburgh, where he’s slated to be the keynote speaker at their symposium, “Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke Prevention.” This event, at the campus’ Kaplan Hall, runs from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, and is open to the general public. Mr. Devitt plans to video the day’s activities.
He believes there are two reasons he’s given so many opportunities to act as a brain injury spokesperson—his unique perspective as a survivor, and his conviction. “I have the type of conviction that can only come from knowing you’re doing your life’s work,” says the soft-spoken yet fiercely committed Mr. Devitt. “To the point that I see my experience as something of a blessing in disguise.”
