Tariq Drabu Discusses Need for Early Dentistry in Children in 2014

He spent years working in busy dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia, but always had a passion for oral surgery, he went on to receive his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Drabu is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale. Tariq Drabu said “It is a huge concern to note how many children throughout the United Kingdom are undergoing general anaesthetic for tooth extraction. This has become a hot topic after an ITV programme was aired. “The Dentists” reached over one million people across the country showing young children undergoing general anaesthetic to have their decayed teeth removed. It was a fly on the wall documentary showing life at Manchester Dental Hospital.”
Tariq Drabu went on to say “Statistics show that almost twenty five percent of children aged five years old have at least one cavity. The good news is that this is an improvement over recent years, but still not good enough. On top of that there are still pockets of urban Britain where social deprivation and high levels of dental disease go hand in hand. The only way to reduce this number even further is to constantly provide dental education to children and parents, ensuring that every care is taken to prevent tooth decay.”
Tariq Drabu closed in saying “Children should be supervised while brushing their teeth until they are at least eight. Ideally they should start brushing the minute their first tooth appears and visit the dentist as their parents would for regular annual check-ups. Even though children start brushing with their baby teeth, getting used to how to brush, learning the best way to achieve best results and learning the importance of brushing can start being developed at a very young age. My concern is that children being hospitalised for dental treatment may develop a dental phobia at an early age, rather than those who attend dental check-ups and realise that there isn’t anything to fear.”
