Tariq Drabu Praises Study On the Toxic Effects of Smoking

Tariq Drabu, the well-known dentist, was speaking in reference to an article recently published in the Dental Tribune website in their EU section. The article, which can be read here.
Tariq Drabu, leading dentist, said, “A new study conducted in France reports that smokers and ex-smokers may not be able to taste full flavour of substances like coffee. They have found that the toxic chemicals contained within tobacco inhibit the effectiveness and regeneration of taste buds resulting in an inability to taste bitter tasting foods and drinks. The study tested taste recognition amongst 94 smokers, 48 ex-smokers and 3009 non-smokers within the middle aged range. Although the study reveals little changes to tasting sweet, salty and sour tastes, the ability to perceive bitter tastes was affected.”
Tariq Drabu, dentist, went on to say, “I am aware that much is already known, and has been publicised about the toxic and dangerous effects of smoking on our overall heath and especially or oral health. However, as many of my colleagues know, I welcome all studies on the subject. I am committed to helping reduce the number of smokers and by doing so, address the instances of serious oral diseases like mouth cancers. It is a subject and an objective I am passionate about. Incidents of mouth cancer around the world are still high. Although much is being done to tackle the issue, the truth is, until we stop people smoking, it will continue. I believe that scientific research will improve how we can treat oral diseases as well as develop aids and tools to help people who want to stop. I know how difficult it is to stop smoking, but I have seen first-hand the damage it can cause to all aspects of health. I welcome this study and hope the team continue with their excellent work.”
Tariq Drabu, renowned dentist closed by saying, “The report concluded that the results should be used in further studies. The perception of bitter taste could be very useful in the development of tools which could prevent smoking and help with stopping smoking. I will be watching the development of this area of research with interest. The more we know about the effects of smoking and the toxic nature of the practice, the better equipped we will be to help people stop. It is important work and I am delighted it is being undertaken. We must do all we can to help people who smoke, and to create initiatives that stop people from starting in the first place.”
