Tariq Drabu Says Oral Health Results Vary According to the Age of Patients

He said, “The research shows that parents are looking after their children’s oral health. This is excellent news. Sadly, the research reveals that adults do not take as much care with their own oral health.”

Tariq Drabu, who is based in Manchester, remarked, “The research undertaken showed that 72% of parents believed their children to be in good oral health and ensured they visited the dentist. This figure was only 67.7% in 2003. The increase is significant and is surely a result of increased education in schools and via health services. The report also indicates that 71.5% of parents stated that their child had visited a dentist within the last year. Sadly, the statistics for older patients is not as positive. Shockingly, 77% of adults over 50 years of age had not had any form of professionals dental cleaning in the last year. It is hardly surprising that cases of serious gum disease and oral mouth cancers are on the increase.”
Tariq Drabu, speaking in Manchester said, “Poverty is the biggest factor affecting the health of the nation. The report indicates that adults who live in poverty have the poorest oral health. Shockingly, while children from poor backgrounds are more likely to receive the dental care they need, adults who are poor or on very low incomes are not accessing the dental care they require.”
He closed by saying, “This is an extremely serious issue. The government must address this issue to ensure everyone is able to access the dental care they need. There must be a correlation between the increase in cases of oral cancers and these statistics which show that older people are not visiting the dentist regularly. The dental profession is doing everything it can to encourage people to attend. Public information is helping to inform people about good oral health. But clearly, the government must also help people in poverty to access the health care they so urgently require.”
