Tariq Drabu Warns Colleagues About False and Unauthorised Communications

Tariq Drabu spoke recently in reference to an article published by The Denistry website. The article highlights a serious issue that is of great concern to the General Dental Council (GDC) and to dental workers. The GDC has discovered that its name and email addresses are being used in communications that were not released or endorsed by the organisation. These communications are fake and do not come from within the organisation.
The GDC has also confirmed what genuine communications will contain in the hope that recipients will more easily spot the fakes. The organisation has also provided a telephone number that can be called if anyone finds a communication which looks suspicious. The full article can be read here.
Tariq Drabu said, “The General Dental Council has discovered that a startling number of communications have been using its name and email addresses to give readers the false impression that the communication is an official circular from the GDC. I have informed my staff and colleagues about this and advised them to keep a look out for any information or communication that claims to be from the GDC. The GDC reported that there had been a number of recent incidents that had come to its attention so my staff and I will be on the lookout.”
Tariq Drabu also said, “We all use a variety of communications to conduct business these days. Email, websites, social media, and blogs are all an integral part of running a busy dental practice or working within any area of dentistry. I can fully understand why the GDC is so concerned about these false communications. It is a highly respected organisation within the dental community and as such its communications are taken extremely seriously by dentists and dental workers. False communications could cause confusion, or worse, they could result in serious problems and misunderstandings.”
Most organisations have websites which list members and their email addresses. Unfortunately, this leaves them open to abuse by unscrupulous individuals who are trying to mislead people.
Tariq Drabu closed by saying, “Although it is impossible for the GDC to prevent the unauthorised use of its email addresses, it has released recommendations to dental staff to help them identify genuine communications. Real communications from the GDC will include the contact name and telephone number so the recipient will know who is writing to them. I have passed this information to my staff and colleagues to ensure they are aware of the situation and know what to do if they receive a suspicious communication.”
