(PRWEB) February 28, 2014 -- Tariq Drabu is a highly respected dentist. He is the owner of the popular Langley Dental Practice in Middleton, Manchester. In addition, he is the renowned Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and treatment Services for NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He is a well-known and highly respected teacher of post graduate dental students in England so he is well positioned to fully understand the serious impact that a reduction in student training places is having on the profession.
Tariq Drabu, the leading dentist, was speaking recently in reference to an article published by the Dental Tribune website, within its UK Dental News. The article can be read here in full.
Tariq Drabu, Manchester dentist said, “The article reports that Scottish dental students are finding it extremely difficult to access places in dental practices for the vocational elements of their training. Vocational training is a compulsory element of a newly qualified dentist’s NHS training. The British Dental Association (BDA) says that over one third of the students who will be graduating this summer could find themselves without a placement. This is a shocking statistic. However, it is good news to see that the Scottish government is increasing funding for trainers. My hope is that this will contribute to addressing this serious issue. My concerns, which are shared by a number of my colleagues, and which are highlighted in the article, are that the lack of places could result in our newly qualified dentists moving abroad to seek work elsewhere. Australia and New Zealand have both been highlighted as potential locations where our new dental graduates may choose to find work.”
Tariq Drabu, the leading dentist, went on to say, “It seems that our dental graduates are finding it increasingly difficult to find practices willing to take them on. This is a sad state of affairs and something must be done to address it. If we are losing graduates to other countries, we are likely to see a worrying drop in the number of new British dentists in this country. That is an extremely worrying trend. The planned increase in grant assistance to practices that offer training spaces is an excellent way to start to readdress the imbalance. I hope it will encourage more practices to take our young graduates on and give them the vocational training they so urgently need in order to fulfill all their compulsory training requirements. The articles states that grants will be increased from £13,164 to £15,000.”
Tariq Drabu, top dentist, closed by saying, “Although some quarters do not believe the additional funding will help to improve the situation for young graduates, I think this is a negative perception. I believe that any action to help and encourage practices to create training spaces is a good thing and can only help to address the situation. A willingness to invest further in the scheme as a way of ensuring more training places are created must surely be a good thing.”
