TDG: Consumer Interest in Live Linear Streaming to Drive Encoding Demand
Plano, TX (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- According to a new report from The Diffusion Group, operators looking to exploit consumer interest in live linear streaming of TV content should pay particular attention to encoding solutions when building out their delivery systems. Live Linear Encoding, notes that, despite consumer interest, live linear streaming remains in its infancy, subject to a wide variety of experimental uses with unclear business models.
According to research conducted by TDG and iStreamPlanet, 84% of pay-TV subscribers that also use a home broadband service believe having live access to their pay-TV channels on their net-connected video devices would be of value. Servicing this interest, as noted below, would have a highly positive impact on how consumers perceive the value of their pay-TV service.
According to Andy Beach, TDG Senior Analyst and author of the new report, “All major broadcasters and operators will eventually offer full-on live linear streaming to their viewers. It is less of a question of if live linear access will become more popular, but rather how quickly.”
To date, however, live linear offerings have remained limited in terms of devices and locations supported, as well as the type and number of channels available. While services like Aereo, for example, are distributing live linear TV channels directly via broadband, legal wranglings between Aereo and major content works are challenging its use. Waiting in the wings, however, are several tech companies seeking to integrate live linear services into their existing platforms. “If even one of these companies succeeds in a significant commercial deal,” notes Beach, “it could be the tipping point for a flood of live linear services in the OTT world.”
TDG’s report on Live Linear Encoding focuses on the beginning of the live linear streaming process: the encoders required to power a live linear streaming experience and the companies bringing these solutions to market. To purchase this report, please visit http://www.tdgresearch.com.
