Teachers Insurance Specialists Announce Results Of Recent School Supply Survey

The survey found that each year there is an increase in teachers who spend their own income to furnish their students with new school supplies.
The survey conducted by Horace Mann Insurance indicated that 56 percent of teachers said they spent at least $200 of their own money on school supplies, and 13 percent stated they spent more than $600. More than half of the teachers surveyed said their school districts cut annual budgets for school supplies. Most commonly cut from the school supply budget were general school supply items, such as paper and pens, followed by math and science supplies, as well as reading and language supplies.
"Budget cuts are forcing teachers to make cuts in their lesson plans due to lack of supplies. The survey also showed nearly 38 percent of teacher’s reportedly abandoned more than two projects in the school year due to lack of supplies to facilitate the projects. Budget cuts are a real challenge within the education system.
