Teachers Will Learn STEM Skills through SAE International AWIM Challenges During Session Sponsored by Toyota
LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) April 28, 2017 -- Teachers will bolster their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills during a professional development sessions hosted by 186th Street Elementary School of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Made possible by a generous grant by Toyota, the session at the 186th Street School, now a STEAM Academy, will be held Tuesday, May 2, from 3-5 p.m.
Learning activities will include SAE International’s award-winning A World In Motion (AWIM) Skimmer and Straw Rocket challenges.
- In the Skimmer Challenge, students construct paper sailboats and test the effect of different sail shapes, sizes, and construction methods to meet specific performance criteria. Friction, forces, the effect of surface area and design are some of the physical phenomena students encounter in this challenge.
- In the Straw Rockets Challenge, students explore the early life of Dr. Robert Goddard while reading the biography, The Rocket Age Takes Off. After investigating Goddard's early trials and tribulations in creating the first liquid fueled rocket engine, students begin to uncover the work necessary to optimize a design with the goal of creating a straw rocket that flies the farthest and highest.
The activities during this May 2nd session will help teachers at 186th Street Elementary School use STEM materials to their maximum effectiveness, thereby helping to improve the already successful and commended STEAM Academy.
The A World In Motion program brings STEM education to life through hands-on activities for students in grades K-8. Each AWIM activity incorporates a curriculum built around the "Engineering Design Experience," and requires students to work in teams to solve a “challenge” to design, build and test a product. In addition, an industry volunteer works in the classroom to assist teachers with AWIM content delivery and serve as a role model, community liaison and professional resource.
