History of the Warehouse
The Liggett and Myers Harpring Tobacco Warehouse was built in 1930 as a storage and shipping facility to the expanding and growing tobacco market. The warehouse was owned and operated by Liggett and Myers from 1930 to 1980. From 1980 to 2007, the warehouse was primarily used as general storage. In 2007, the warehouse was purchased and used as an antique mall until 2012. In 2013, the building was purchased at auction by the owner of Teak Closeouts.
The location of the warehouse sits in the heart of the Lexington Distillery District revitalization effort. The building was nominated and listed on the National Register of Historic Places Program in 2013. The warehouse is in fascinatingly good shape inside, although being neglected for many decades on the exterior.
The building is 120,000 square feet and sits on 6.5 acres. The original address was 1211 Manchester Street from 1930-2013, but access over the tracks was closed by the RJ Corman Railroad Company in January 2013. For 83-years, access was granted by a private right-a-way contract with the railway and property owner. Repeated efforts to extend the contract were attempted, but the RJ Corman Company refused citing safety concerns. Temporary access to the property is located in the residential neighborhood of Oakpark at 1206 Liggett Street.
