Tech Industry Gains 13,600 IT Jobs in August
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 30, 2016 -- The IT industry gained 13,600 jobs in August, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, September 2, 2016.
Employment gains in the IT industry represent a 25.9 percent increase over July’s employment gains of 10,800 jobs. Collectively, the sectors that form the IT industry now sit at 4,693,500 employed workers. IT job data is collected from multiple sectors, including the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services subsector, and the management and technical consulting services subsector.
The data processing, hosting and related services sector gained 900 jobs in August after losing 1,200 in July. Since August 2015, the sector has only gained 1,900 jobs after several months of back-to-back gains and losses. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.
The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector continued to experience job losses, decreasing by 700 jobs in August and 3,300 jobs in July. The subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors, now sits at 1,035,600 employed IT workers. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has lost 15,600 jobs.
The computer systems design and related services subsector, a part of the professional and business services sector, gained 6,100 jobs in August, a 32 percent decrease in growth over the 9,100 jobs gained in July. Since August 2015, the subsector has gained 79,600 jobs.
The management and technical consulting services subsector gained 7,300 jobs in August. Over the past 12 months, the subsector has gained a total of 68,800 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 151,000 in August, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.9 percent. Last month, employment continued to trend upwards for several service-providing industries like food services and drinking places, and professional and technical services.
