Technology Shift in Microscopy Market Driving Growth, According to BCC Research
Wellesley, Mass. (PRWEB) August 17, 2015 -- The microscopy market is undergoing a technology shift from optical microscopes and toward charged particle and other advanced microscopes. BCC Research reveals in its new report this shift is partly the result of a growing need to image structures on an increasingly smaller scale, especially in the field of nanotechnology.
The field of microscopy continues to evolve rapidly as new requirements and imaging technologies are developed. After weathering the recent global economic dislocations, this market should enjoy favorable near- to mid-term prospects.
The global market for microscopes, accessories and supplies totaled $4.3 billion in 2014. This market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% during the forecast period 2015–2020. Revenues should total $4.6 billion and $6.3 billion in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Scanning probe microscopes, the fastest-growing market segment, should expand at a CAGR of 11.4%. Charged particle and optical microscopes should grow at five-year CAGRs of 7.3% and 4.3%, respectively.
The optical microscope segment, at one time the largest submarket, contracted significantly in 2012, but BCC Research believes the market should still see long-term growth. However, growth will be slowed by a shift from optical microscopes toward SEMs and other types of microscopes.
"This technology shift stems not only from the growing need for nano-scale images, but also from the “development of instruments and technologies that extend the range of advanced microscopic tools available to the researcher who formerly had to rely on optical microscopic techniques,” says BCC Research analyst Andrew McWilliams. “The effects of this technology shift on the market for compound optical microscopes are difficult to quantify. However, BCC Research expects it to reduce the CAGR of the compound optical microscopy market by at least two percentage points over the next five years.”
