Jerry Brown signed the nation's first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery and convenience stores, driven to action by the amount of waste in streets and waterways. Despite polls showing widespread support, out-of-state bag makers immediately vowed to overturn the ban, contributing a whopping $2.5 million in order to collect 504,000 signatures by the end of 2014 in hopes of placing a referendum on the November 2016 ballot which would reverse the ban.
"Like any change, there is going to be push back and adjustment, but once it's the norm plastic bags will be a thing of the past. By signing a petition it would just be putting money in the plastic bag makers pockets and not helping our environment," according to Elise Harding, owner of Tee Compressed.
Under the state's new landmark environmental law, SB270, single-use plastic bags will slowly be phased out of large grocery store chains by July 1, 2015. Convenience and liquor stores have an additional year to comply. The law allows grocers to charge a fee of up to 10 cents per plastic bag used. However, it does not apply to plastic bags used or produce or meats, or to shopping bags used by other retailers.
"Obvious pro to the bag ban is environmental benefits to our state. The cons require individuals to pay a $0.10 fee or remember to bring their own bags. Consumers should get into the habit of bringing reusable bags with them," Harding said.
