Teldat Updates its Successful In-vehicle & Transport “Communication Platform” with its new H2-Automotive
(PRWEB) March 19, 2015 -- The Teldat H2-Automotive in-vehicle & transport router is a rugged communication platform that is the latest of a line of similar devices that Teldat has worked with successfully across the globe in many installations. This is much more than a router as it gives its customers and users an advanced IP communications platform for broadband cellular, Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet connectivity, within a robust mechanical design, made for the specifications of buses, trucks, ambulances and similar vehicles.
What are the changes that make the H2-Automotive stand out most from previous Teldat in-vehicle routers?
H2-Automotive communication platform has a total capacity for up to three embedded communication modules, whether WWAN or WLAN. Therefore various combinations of modules are possible, but two options stand out from the rest and they are the following. Firstly, a customer can have either two embedded 4G/LTE modules with one Wi-Fi 802.11n module or secondly, the other way around, one 4G/LTE module with two Wi-Fi 802.11n modules. It all depends on the requirements of the end user. In certain cases the external network connectivity is of vital importance, so two 4G/LTE modules may be required, as one will act as a resilience module. In other cases the end user may either not have enough capacity with one Wi-Fi 802.11n module or again, it may be that it is seen as important to have a resilience Wi-Fi module. In this case two Wi-Fi 802.11n modules would be required.
However, as far as fallback is concerned with the external network, in many scenarios end users just use the one 4G/LTE module, as each module has dual SIM capacity, indicating that two telecommunication operators can work on each module. One would be the main line SIM and the other the fallback SIM.
Other Competitive Advantages
Another point concerning the WWAN connectivity is that the new H2-Automotive router has an external USB port which was not available before. This is important for prototyping other telecommunication carriers with different frequencies to those on the embedded 4G/LTE modules.
The LAN ports now are not only Gigabit Ethernet ports on this advanced router / communication platform, but there are also five ports in total compared to four in the previous version. The additional Gigabit Ethernet port can be WAN/DMZ.
Teldat keeps up with the latest technology on the H2-Automotive as it has considerably increased the throughput. A new CPU is used in comparison to the previous unit. Higher performance is also achieved by having a hardware-based data encryption via multi-VPN transmission.
As far as hardware and mechanical design are concerned, Teldat H2-Automotive has a strong competitive advantage against other players in the market. Extremely important is, its anti-shock and anti-vibration protection. This hugely increases the lifetime of the unit and drops failure rates versus Teldat’s competitors. Indeed, being fed from the vehicle battery via 12VDC or 24VDC, using a robust connector as is the H2-automotive, is another advantage, but only if the router is able to manage battery voltage peaks, as is the Teldat device. Many competitors cannot handle this as well and hence the huge competitive advantage that Teldat has.
Also the user configurable turn off delays permits the router to have independence from a sudden or temporary vehicle engine turn off. Moreover a vital point related to hardware design is the embedded advanced GPS, which supports critical location based applications such as GEO Fencing which has been of vital importance in certain projects which Teldat has won.
Case Studies
Indeed, Teldat has won over time some very interesting projects. Perhaps one of the most interesting projects was to equip buses in Boston with Teldat H1-Automotive+ (predecessor to the H2-Automotive). After the Boston Marathon bombing the buses in this city needed a video surveillance system in order to ensure security for passengers, as well as for bus drivers.
The H1-Automotive+ routers / communication platform had to carry out some very specific requirements in this project and the use of GEO Fence with GPS based control was one of them. Moreover, the Teldat routers gave the transit security headquarters the ability to monitor the entire fleet of buses in real-time and on an individual basis, the transit police on patrol could see live video from individual buses. In all passenger safety on buses was seen as safer with the mentioned project. This is only a brief summary of what was achieved within the project and a more detailed text of the Boston case study can be seen by clicking here…
There was an even earlier model of a Teldat in-vehicle communication platform called the Teldat H1-Automotive. This router was used some years back and was installed in all the Madrid City Buses (Spain, Europe). Over 2.000 buses were equipped with this router. One of the main challenges here was to enable the Madrid buses to have a permanent broadband connection so that the on-board cameras could connect to the control center. Independently, the Madrid buses also wanted give a Wi-Fi connectivity to their passengers, but always prioritizing video surveillance and any other sensitive data transmission.
All this was achieved with the Teldat H1-Automotive routers / communication platform. Teldat won this project because of many reasons. To mention a few, it can be said that the routers integration between the wireless services and the mechanical design (anti-shock, anti-vibration, as well as high temperature dissipation) was essential. Also Teldat’s use of QoS and secure technologies to isolate corporate telecommunication services from the passenger services on the bus was very important. Moreover, within both projects it was decided to use a Teldat communication platform, as it was the basis for future added value on-board services and solutions, being a totally independent unit from the system providers.
Other Products
It is of interest to mention that Teldat has other transport routers / communication platforms. The Teldat H1-Rail is a similar router, but developed for installation on trains and rail vehicles. These devices are prepared for the rigorous conditions that must be handled on rail vehicles, such as vibrations, voltage spikes and of course the strict and demanding standards to obtain specific rail certifications, including EN 50155.
However, with the H2-Automotive unit, Teldat has been able to evolve its in-vehicle router / communication platform series by introducing all the new features and improvements mentioned at the beginning of this article and at the same time, Teldat has been able to make the product offering considerably more economical. All of this together, naturally makes the new H2-Automotive product extremely attractive.
