Telematics Update: In the era of the ‘Internet of Things’, 24-hour connectedness and high-speed connectivity, it seems absurd that 94 percent of Europeans who travel outside their home country limit their use of data services because of mobile roaming charges (according to a survey of 28,000 people by the European Commission). Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice President said, “I am honestly shocked by these figures. Consumers are limiting their phone use in extreme ways and this makes no sense for the companies either.” It is clear that automakers, mobile network operators and the authorities need to come together to solve this impasse that has the potential to slow the growth of the connected car in Europe.
