Testosterone Lawsuit Filings Rise To Over 1,200 In Multidistrict Litigation Pending In Northern Illinois Federal Court Reports The Oliver Law Group

According to the law firm, "The potential cardiovascular risks associated with low testosterone therapy medication have not only been key allegations in testosterone lawsuits, but also have raised the concerns of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which approves all low testosterone treatment drugs. Earlier this month, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication requiring labels of prescription testosterone products to inform users of possible increased risk of heart attack and stroke with use of the product. The labeling must also include that testosterone products are only approved for men whose low testosterone levels are caused by certain medical conditions, and not by the normal aging process. According to the FDA, testosterone therapy is only for men who have hypogonadism, which is low testosterone levels due to a medication disorder. The federal regulatory agency also called for manufacturers of testosterone products to conduct a “well-designed clinical trial to more clearly address the question of whether an increased risk of heart attack or stroke exists among users of these products.”

The firm further notes, that court records indicate that among the recent testosterone lawsuits filings in the Northern Illinois federal court is one filed on behalf of a 79-year-old Virginia man who began using AndroGel in 2008. According to the complaint, the man suffered a heart attack in January 2010, and was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and stroke in March 2013, allegedly as a result of using AndroGel. The testosterone complaint was filed against AbbVie and Abbott Laboratories, which manufactures and markets AndroGel. (Case: 1:15-cv-02203) Another testosterone lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Georgia man who suffered a stroke in September 2011, allegedly after using the testosterone gel Axiron. According to the lawsuit, the man started taking Depo-Testosterone in December 2012 and suffered a stroke in February 2013 and a third stroke in August 2014. The lawsuit names as defendants, Eli Lilly, which produces Axiron, and Pfizer and Pharmacia & Upjohn Co., which makes Depo-Testosterone. (Case No. 1:15-cv-01668)
