Texas Disability Law Firm Partners Now Members of U.S. Supreme Court
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) July 22, 2013 -- Paul B. Burkhalter and John Driskill, both partners of the Texas Social Security disability law firm Morgan & Weisbrod, L.L.P, were sworn in as members of the Supreme Court Bar Association on May 12, 2013. Besides the prestige offered by admission into the SCOTUS bar, becoming members will allow the partners to try cases before the highest court in the land.
The swearing-in ceremony took place against the backdrop of tradition and reverence in the nation’s highest court. Formality prevails in this atmosphere where, even when justices aren’t present, attorneys representing the U.S. government are required to wear formal tails and electronic devices are strictly forbidden. Eight of the nine justices were present on this Sunday in May. Once court was in session, three decisions were announced.
Debbie Shifrin, President of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR), introduced Burkhalter and Driskill to the court. The partners stood before the justices as Chief Justice John Roberts approved their memberships. The Clerk of the Court then administered the spoken oath, officially swearing them in to the bar of the Supreme Court.
Paul Burkhalter, Esq., joined the Morgan & Weisbrod team after serving at the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of General Counsel, representing the Social Security Administration in disability claims before the Federal Courts in both Texas and Louisiana. Previously, he served as president of the Dallas Association of Social Security Attorneys. He has served as the Chair of the Houston Bar Associations’ Social Security disability section and served for eight years on the NOSSCR Board of Directors. He is board certified in Social Security Law and has been named one of Houston’s “Top Lawyers for the People” by H Magazine several times. Mr. Burkhalter recently worked from Morgan & Weisbrod’s Austin office, but is currently returning to the firm’s headquarters in Dallas.
John Driskill, Esq., has been with the firm since 1998. He is board certified in Social Security disability law and has handled Social Security cases since 1993. He’s on the NOSSCR Board of Directors and has been named one of Houston’s “Top Lawyers for the People” by H Magazine since 2006. Mr. Driskill works out of the firm’s Houston office.
In order to have an application considered for membership in the U.S. Supreme Court bar association, an attorney must first be a member of the highest court in his local jurisdiction, have a certificate of good standing from the state where he practices, be sponsored by two attorneys already in the bar, pay a fee, and take an oath.
