Texas Farmer Elected to Lead National Corn Growers Association
Lubbock, Texas (PRWEB) June 17, 2015 -- Texas Corn Producers congratulates Wesley Spurlock, a TCP director and farmer from Stratford, Texas, who was elected to the National Corn Growers Association’s officer rotation by the Corn Board. Spurlock will serve as the organization’s first vice president for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
“I feel honored that my colleagues on the board chose to place their trust in my ability and dedication to leading our association forward as we work to create greater opportunities for corn growers across the country,” Spurlock said.
Spurlock and his wife Susie run a diverse farm in the Texas Panhandle. He has been very active in the agricultural industry on a local, state and national scale for years.
Having a Texan serve in this national capacity has benefits to state and national farmers alike.
“Wesley has been a dynamic figure in the Texas agricultural industry,” TCP Executive Director David Gibson. “His involvement at a local, state and national level gives him a unique perspective as he moves into this leadership position at a national level.”
According to Gibson, it is Spurlock’s extensive experience that sets him up to thrive in this leadership position.
Spurlock is currently the Texas Corn Producers Board treasurer, serves on several TCP committees, and contributes to multiple boards within his local community. Additionally, he has served in a variety of roles at a national capacity both as a NCGA member and since being elected to the Corn Board.
“Coming from the diverse Texas agricultural angle, Wesley’s understanding of the impact of issues and policies on farmers from varying regions will be a tremendous asset to our state and nation’s farmers alike,” TCPB Chairman Scott Averhoff says.
In addition to tackling the many issues impacting America’s corn farmers, Spurlock says a focus on expanding markets for corn is key.
“Farmers face a multitude of challenges right now, but it is of the utmost importance that we work proactively to build demand at the same time,” Spurlock says. “From a proliferation of regulations to threats to the Renewable Fuel Standard to misinformation about our industry that permeates public perception, we have much work to do. I look forward to working with our grower leadership over the coming years to find innovative, impactful ways to grow the demand for our growing crop.”
On Oct. 1, current NCGA President Chip Bowling, of Maryland, becomes chairman and the current first vice president, Rob Elliott of Illinois, becomes NCGA president. In October 2016, Elliott becomes chairman and Spurlock becomes president.
