Texas Higher Education Institutions Improve Learning Outcomes Using Technology and Content Solutions
Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 09, 2014 -- Although each institution, course, and classroom is unique, instructors in higher education today face a series of common teaching and learning challenges. To demonstrate how institutions are using technology and content solutions to address various education challenges, Pearson announced a report today, “Pearson’s 2014 Science and Engineering Efficacy Report,” highlighting 40 community colleges and four-year institutions, including Texas-based schools that have made a positive, measurable impact on teaching and learning.
This report shows that Pearson’s Mastering platform engages students inside and outside of the classroom with personalized and continuously adaptive learning experiences. Mastering reacts to how students are performing, offering data-driven guidance that helps them better absorb course material and understand difficult concepts.
Pearson’s Senior Vice President of Efficacy and Quality, John Tweeddale, stated, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 17 of the top 20 highest-paying occupations require STEM skills, and projects that we will have over eight million STEM workers in the U.S. by 2018. To make this a reality, the U.S. will need individuals with strong STEM-related skills to fill those jobs. That’s why we worked with each institution to ensure that our products and services are truly equipping learners with the tools, resources and support they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.”
Collin College, based in Plano, TX, has been using MasteringBiology since 2009 and added a new feature of the program in 2013, known as Adaptive Follow-Up, which generates questions intended to focus each student on gaps in their understanding of content, based on their performance on the MasteringBiology homework assignment. As a result, students performed better on their exams. Students indicated this adaptive feedback was beneficial in mastery of concepts and motivated them to work harder on their assignments.
Biology Professor, Rebecca Orr, Collin College, said, “Students struggle with complex concepts to be mastered in our freshman majors biology course. With MasteringBiology and Adaptive Follow-Up, students have the opportunity for personalized learning and remediation.”
Pearson’s 2014 Science and Engineering Efficacy Report showcases how each institution boosted learning outcomes with the use of Pearson’s Mastering technology. Each school addressed common teaching and learning challenges. These include improving the ability to do the following: boost success and retention, enable early intervention, enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, increase interactive learning and student engagement, improve completion rate of assignments, integrate personalized learning with Adaptive Follow-Up, redesign multiple courses/change course format, and track and quantify learning outcomes.
