The Program - With 13 scientific sessions spanning 3.5 days, the meeting consists of 2 concurrent morning and 2 concurrent afternoon symposia. The conference will begin with an opening and welcome from The Protein Society President, James U. Bowie, University of California, Los Angeles. The Plenary Awards Session
Students & Young Investigators - A hallmark of The Protein Society Symposium is the special emphasis placed upon fostering the growth and development of young scientists. Through unique and plentiful opportunities for mentorship and interaction with established researchers, career guidance via educational workshops led by established academics, as well as numerous prospects for recognition of their work and participation. Two Young Investigator speaking slots are reserved in each unique session for junior researchers selected from abstracts submitted for poster presentations. A competitive and robust Poster Competition with 10 Best Poster Prizes allows students and postdocs to gain experience defending their research. The Education Committee presents an Undergraduate Research Session where winning students can learn valuable skills by giving talks to a receptive and supportive audience. Workshops led by experts and organized by the Mentoring Committee focus upon building core scientific competencies such as effective speaking and grant-writing as well as offering real-world insights to support informed professional advancement. A highlight for all participants are the Mentoring Dinners, where students and postdocs can share an informal, low-cost meal with invited speakers or Society leaders in a casual environment. Student and Early-Career registration rates are significantly discounted, and undergraduate registration is completely free.
Travel Assistance - Plentiful and generous travel assistance facilitates student and postdoctoral attendance through three primary sources: The Finn Wold Travel Awards, The Protein Science Young Investigator Travel Grants (sponsored by Wiley-Blackwell), and the FASEB MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) Program for minorities.
The Protein Society Exchange Program is a partnership that encourages interaction with international partners like The Lorne Conference on Protein Structure and Function and the The Protein Science Society of Japan. Post-doctoral delegations will be chosen to attend the Symposium and will be paired with volunteer Graduate Student Ambassadors. Jennifer R. Cochran, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Bioengineering and, by courtesy, of Chemical Engineering Stanford University Schools of Medicine and Engineering, will present a talk as the 2014 Lorne Exchange Speaker.
Two Protein Science Best Paper Speakers will be selected by the Protein Science Editorial staff from 2013 published papers. These first authors will receive acknowledgement and short speaking slots to give talks on the subject of their articles.
The Plenary Awards Session - The final full day of the Symposium will conclude with the Plenary Awards Session, where the 2014 recipients of the prestigious Protein Society Awards are honored. Accepting her 2013 Hans Neurath Award at the 2014 Plenary Awards Session will be Jennifer A. Doudna, PhD, University of California, Berkeley/HHMI. The Session will feature the Protein Society service awards, Best Poster Prize winners, and the talks by the recipients of the following 2014 awards*:
