The American Mesopotamian Organization calls for the establishment of a locally administered Assyrian region in Syria.
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) July 15, 2015 -- The American Mesopotamian Organization (AMO) in coordination with the Assyrian Federation of Sweden and the Assyria Patriotic Movement have issued an international call for the establishment and recognition of a locally administered region by the Assyrian people in the Hassaka Province, located in northeast Syria.
“Since 2011, civil war has raged in Syria. The result has been a lack of stable governance which has exposed the Assyrian, Christian nation in Syria to non-stop acts of murder and mayhem,” said Mr. David William Lazar, chairman of AMO.
“Nobody,” Mr. Lazar further stated, “especially from the international community, has come forward with a credible plan to protect Assyrians, almost all of whom are Christian, from ISIS and other savages currently destroying Syria.
“Assyrians and Assyrian communities, especially in the Hassaka province, have no choice but to provide their own protection and some sense of normalcy. This is the justification for local administrative control,” Lazar said.
The purpose for local administrative control, Lazar explains, is to enable the Assyrian people, from all denominations, to govern themselves without the interference and domination of other groups. This arrangement should, Lazar further commented, remain in place until such time as law and order returns to Syria.
“We do not undertake these actions lightly,” Lazar said. “We have carefully deliberated this matter with numerous, international and Diaspora-based Assyrian Organizations, especially those with members who, having been driven from Syria and the Middle East, have had to endure the loss of their homes, land and property. What's at stake here is nothing shy of the future of an entire people.”
About: About the American Mesopotamian Organization
The American Mesopotamian Organization believes that the Assyrian American community can be instrumental in bringing about change to US policy towards the Assyrians of the Middle East. We strive to be part of this change and part of the solution in defending Assyrian political and human rights throughout the Near East. While we will represent the collective Assyrian American viewpoint on matters of public policy, we will also serve as liaison between the community and their elected leaders.
