From September, Buckinghamshire New University is offering a new package to support students’ academic development and enhance their experience and employability.
The Big Deal On Course package, developed jointly by the University and its Students’ Union, is worth up to £1,000 to each new undergraduate student over their three-year period of study.
Depending on the course, the package can include book tokens for essential textbooks, equipment and materials, photocopying credits and a contribution to the cost of field trips and degree shows.
Means-tested bursaries will also be available to help students cover the costs of essential field trips as well as a fund for travel costs to attend job interviews, work placements and internships.
Gown hire will be offered at not cost to students graduating from September 2015 and after.
Professor Shân Wareing, Pro Vice Chancellor Learning & Teaching, explained: “At most UK universities, in addition to tuition fees, students have to pay for books and course equipment, events, membership of clubs and societies, sport activities and social trips. Many people just don’t realise how expensive these extra costs can be.
“So at Bucks New University, in addition to the benefits we provide for students within their fee, we have pledged to make clear upfront any additional essential costs related to courses, such as textbooks, field trips, equipment or materials, to enable students to budget.
“We are also increasing access to key services during term time at the University’s campus at High Wycombe. The library, IT suites and café will be open 24-hours a day and students will be able to use studios and events and dance spaces for longer.”
All of the new benefits are in addition to the University’s unique Big Deal package. Bucks New University is the only UK university to offer students no cost access to such a wide range of complimentary activities which include events, sport, skills workshops and training, and membership of over 40 different societies.
Students don’t have to pay a penny to play competitive sport and be transported to games, with the cost of playing kit and accommodation at competitions all covered. They have the opportunity to boost their CV with free workshops and certified courses like emergency first-aid and public speaking training.
Tickets for all entertainment events are also free and trips to the theatre and theme parks are organised at no cost to students.
Naomi Franco, President of Bucks Students’ Union, added: “The scale of the Big Deal and On Course package is unmatched anywhere in UK higher education, making it a totally unique offer. No other university in the country supports its students quite like we do and provides all these opportunities for free.”
