The generation known as The Baby Boomers- born to those penned by columnist Tom Brokaw as The Greatest Generation during the post-war “Baby Boom” of 1946-1964 are a force to be reckoned with.
As the Baby Boomer generation starts moving into their golden years, they’re organizing- and poised to make a big celebration out of it. They’re creating documentaries on themselves for TV. They’ve taken over Facebook, wresting the social media giant from the younger generation who’ve moved on to Twitter and Instagram.
Now having the time- and interest- to reconnect with their past and revisit their accomplishments (good and bad), Boomer-era bands are again filling social halls in every town and shanty in America. Friday night dances and simple live music nights with friends are springing up all across America.
And one of the great unknowns- himself a thirty-year veteran of TV and video- has written it all down.
First-time author Macari has authored The Boomers: The Story of Adonis, A Story of Our Generation. An inspired work “thirty years in the making” (Amazon, Ingram), it tells the tale of the Boomer generation through the epic shared experiences of one group of people from the northeastern U. S., a regional band who made quite an impact in the late 1970s during the live music heyday, playing alongside giants, yet, who “lived to tell about it”. Their shared experiences could have happened in Portland, or Jacksonville, Philly or Chicago. A True Story, often funny, at times poignant and tragic, it vividly recounts a story that resonates, in a time most Baby Boomers remember all too fondly- and want to revisit again.
The “Boomer” generation has been portrayed in widely-acclaimed generational TV such as The Wonder Years, in films such as The Big Chill, Stand By Me, Eddie and the Cruisers, and Almost Famous. Classic Rock still dominates the airwaves, further evidencing the listening preferences of not only the Boomers, but their younger siblings and generations as well.
Macari believes that perhaps there are still a few genies left to come out from the Boomer bottle.
The “Boomers” are increasingly impacting commerce, commercials and communications in a way not seen since they entered the world by storm in the Sixties and Seventies. Their music is still there.
And it shows no sign of stopping.
Dave Grohl of Nirvana and now the Foo Fighters fame is chronicling the American music catalog in a Showtime series “Sonic Highways.
Feature-length documentaries by Classic Boomer rockers The Eagles and Genesis are pounding Showtime nightly, with more in the works.
Steven van Zandt of The Sopranos and Bruce Springsteen fame is hosting a weekly radio show on Sunday nights on Sirius FM celebrating the music of unknown garage bands for the seventies- Little Steven’s Underground Garage.
And so, the timing of The Boomers: The Story of Adonis, A Story of Our Generation, may just be the catalyst that causes a whole lot of music-makers from a generation past, to step back into the basement studios and dust off their cassettes, eight-tracks and old reel-to-reels, and see what may have missed the first time around.
