The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa Completes $10.5 Million Renovations
Denver, CO (PRWEB) July 16, 2015 -- For 123 years, The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa has been the Denver address of visiting presidents, royalty and rock stars, and now the iconic hotel has completed a $10.5 million renovation that is bringing an unprecedented level of luxury and innovative technology to the Forbes Travel Guide Four Star and AAA Four Diamond legend.
Two hundred rooms have been masterfully renovated with a contemporary look that mingles beautifully with the hotel’s classic Victorian charm. The new rooms feature personal reading lights, flat-screen HDTVs, iPod docking stations and personal device charging stations.
Guestroom designer Reggi Nichols of waldrop+nichols studio of Dallas, Texas, was tasked with creating a guest room experience that appeals to all generations, while respecting the famous history of the hotel. She stated, “The color palette chosen for the new room décor was taken from various areas of the hotel. The sandstone color was taken from the exterior; the topaz and cream colors from the onyx in the original interior architecture; and the sapphire color from the lobby bar.” Room carpeting incorporates these colors in over-scaled patterns of interlocking ovals. Each room boasts an accent wall in the sapphire color, while the other three walls sport cream vinyl coverings.
The artwork in the rooms comes from archival blue prints of the hotel registers and from historic photos of famous guests and periods in the hotel’s history. Built in 1892, The Brown Palace has provided luxurious accommodations to every president (except Calvin Coolidge), as well as to noted celebrities, from Taylor Swift to the Beatles. Some of the wall décor will include signatures of famous guests, such as local legend Margaret “Unsinkable Molly” Brown.
Marcel Pitton, managing director of The Brown, stated, “We understood the responsibility of preserving the character of this legendary hotel, while at the same time giving it a contemporary feeling. I think former guests will be pleasantly surprised when they re-visit the ‘new’ Brown Palace and see the contrasts that have been woven into the design, respecting the past, while bringing a new level of luxury, convenience and modern technology to the rooms.”
EXTERIOR SANDSTONE WORK CONTINUES
Downtown office workers have noticed major construction work on the exterior of The Brown Palace for some time, and this delicate and specialist masonry project will continue until November 2015. “The 123 year old sandstone used in the exterior of the building had begun to wear away in places,” Pitton said. “To keep the beauty of this historic structure, we have redesigned some of the exterior stone around windows, which will create better views from the rooms, while also providing a pleasing exterior,” Pitton added. Sandstone exactly matching the original stone was located in Utah and brought in for the project.
MEETING ROOMS PART OF THE MAKEOVER
An important part of the renovation is the addition of 3,500 square feet of new meeting space. The sales and management offices of the hotel have been relocated from the third floor, making the entire floor now a meeting and conference center on all three sides of the spectacular and famous lobby. The Brown Palace was the first atrium hotel in America with an eight story lobby topped by a stained glass ceiling.
A covered walkway with beautiful views of downtown leads from the second floor meeting level to a 5,800 square foot ballroom and 16 meeting rooms offering an additional 19,453 square feet of space. In total, The Brown Palace can provide 23,253 square feet of meeting and event space. The hotel is attached to a Holiday Inn Express, which provides an additional 231 rooms.
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS COMPLETES $11 MILLION RENOVATION
The Brown Palace’s sister hotel, the 231-room Holiday Inn Express, has also just completed a “top to bottom” $11 million renovation that included all new rooms. Built in 1959, the art deco inspired hotel opened as The Brown Palace West and is connected to The Brown by a covered bridge. The renovation included a complete make-over in every guest room with new wall coverings, new carpets, new bedding, new TVs, and new doors. All corridors and hallways were redone with new wall coverings and carpet, as were all meeting spaces. The fitness club, which is shared with The Brown Palace, was also completely refurbished. Combined, the Holiday Inn Express and The Brown will be able to offer a total of 25,000 square feet of meeting space when the Brown’s new meeting rooms are completed in September 2015. “We have a unique ability in Denver to offer a group 25,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and two very distinctive price points at The Brown or at the Holiday Inn Express, so we can easily accommodate any group that has a wide base of membership looking for different price points,” said Mark Shine, director of sales and marketing for The Brown Palace.
THE CHOICE OF ROCK STARS
It’s become a bit of Denver folklore that both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones stayed at The Brown Palace Hotel, but they are just two of many rock stars that have made The Brown their Denver home of choice. The full list reads like a Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and includes: Taylor Swift, Counting Crows, the Fray, U2, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, John Denver, Carrie Underwood, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, Snoop Dogg, Reba McIntyre, Clint Black, Crosby Stills & Nash & Young, Aerosmith, the Eagles, Cher, Prince, Maria Carey, the Spice Girls, Blondie, Robin Thicke, Tony Bennett and Yo Yo Ma, plus dozens more.
