The Charlotte Museum of History Launches New History Lecture Series Funded by The Wells Fargo Foundation
Charlotte, N.C. (PRWEB) May 15, 2017 -- The Charlotte Museum of History today announced the first in a series of lectures titled the “Ron Hankins History Talks Lecture Series.” The inaugural lecture will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 6 p.m. with a talk by retired U.S. Army Col. Tom Vossler. Vossler is an author and well-known military historian.
Vossler will discuss the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day of the Civil War, and the role North Carolina troops played in the struggle. Vossler also will sign copies of his book, “A Field Guide to Antietam: Experiencing the Battlefield through Its History, Places, and People,” which he co-authored with Carol Reardon.
A reception will follow the lecture, giving attendees the chance to continue the discussion after the formal talk concludes.
“We are so pleased that The Wells Fargo Foundation is supporting history education in Charlotte by funding this lecture series and by engaging the community in discussions with nationally recognized thought leaders in the field of history,” said Kay Peninger, president and CEO of The Charlotte Museum of History.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 6 p.m. at The Charlotte Museum of History at 3500 Shamrock Dr. Tickets are free. The Museums requests that all attendees register in advance at charlottemuseum.org under the Events tab.
About the “Ron Hankins History Talks Lecture Series”
The lecture series is named after Ron Hankins, a retired Wells Fargo executive and former trustee of The Charlotte Museum of History. He is a long-time supporter of the Museum’s mission to engage and educate a broad public audience in the exploration of the Charlotte region’s history. Hankins is a native Charlottean who is passionate about history and the lessons we can learn from it.
“Our vision for the ‘Ron Hankins History Talks Lecture Series’ is to bring Charlotte residents together with leading historians to better understand the history of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and to explore other timely topics related to history,” said Jay Everette, senior vice president of Government and Community Relations at Wells Fargo. “The lecture series will include meaningful opportunities for community conversations and dialogue with these renowned history speakers.”
In addition to his work with The Charlotte Museum of History, Hankins serves on the board of Charlotte’s Trail of History and has been instrumental in education outreach related to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.
“Ron believes in the power of history to help us learn from our past and to shed light on current issues and events,” said Peninger. “It’s very fitting that this lecture series is named in his honor.”

Vossler holds a bachelor’s degree from the Pennsylvania Military College and a master’s degree from Georgia State University. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He is a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide.
