The Children’s Center of Wayne County and Slow Roll Detroit Raise Awareness for Foster Care in Metro Detroit
Detroit, Mich. (PRWEB) July 16, 2016 -- The Children’s Center of Wayne County (TCC) and Slow Roll Detroit held their second annual “Slow Roll For Foster Care Awareness Ride” this week to help bring attention to the urgent need for foster parents in metro Detroit. In Michigan, more than 14,000 children are placed in foster care annually; in Detroit, more than 2,500 children are in the foster system.
On Monday, July 11, the special Slow Roll Detroit bike ride kicked off from The Children’s Center campus in Midtown, at 79 W. Alexandrine Street. For the second year in a row, this extraordinary event brought awareness and attention to the thousands of Detroit children in foster care and the need for loving foster parents in Michigan.
Ride organizers estimate between 3,000 and 4,000 people turned out to show their support for Foster Care Awareness and take part in the annual ride. Participants donned blue Slow Roll for Foster Care Awareness t-shirts, and heard from TCC’s Shereen Allen-Youngblood, as well as Slow Roll co-founder Jason Hall.
"The Slow Roll family is built on supporting each other, and this annual ride is a fun way to bring awareness to the need for foster parents and families in metro Detroit," said Jason Hall, co-founder of Slow Roll Detroit. "Foster care is an important issue in our community, and we're thankful for everyone who came out to ride and show their support."
The Children’s Center of Wayne County provides foster care services for approximately 200 children on any given day. TCC is the only agency in Michigan whose child welfare staff is fully trained in Traumatic Stress, and offers an array of programs to help stabilize families and return children to their homes. They also provide Adoption and Respite Care services, as well as Independent Living for teens who have aged out of the foster care system. TCC is unique in offering a one-stop approach to mental, physical, behavioral and developmental services at a single location on their Midtown campus.
“There is no substitute for a loving and caring home, but this is the reality for thousands of children across metro Detroit,” said Shereen Allen-Youngblood, Community Outreach Coordinator at The Children’s Center. “Fortunately, foster parents can make the ultimate difference in the lives of these youth by providing urgent and sustaining shelter for children at risk, and providing compassionate care and support.”
Founded more than 85 years ago, The Children’s Center provides an integrated care approach to treating the behavioral health, physical health and educational needs of each individual child.
