The Children’s Spot Announces August Speech and Occupational Therapy Groups
Elkridge, MD (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- The Children’s Spot announces their August SPOT Group sessions. Each group has room for 4 children of pre-school to elementary age, where language, communication, sensory, gross and fine motor skills for each child will be taught and strengthened by a speech pathologist and occupational therapist.
"Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder require continuous, specialized instruction with low student to teacher ratios in order to learn and maintain skills; summer break is not an exception. Unfortunately, during summer break, this type of specialized instruction is often difficult to find," stated Nicole Orellana, The Children’s SPOT Speech and Language Therapist.
Each week the SPOT group will focus on a theme, applying every day experiences and an element of fun to the daily therapy programs. Each session will begin with a warm-up involving sensory and motor skills; the activity will involve all 7 senses (to include vestibular and proprioceptive) and give the children the ability to make choices and be encouraged to comment on the experience. Literacy, art or cooking activities will follow after the warm up each day. To end the session students will participate in Yoga, adapted for children with special needs.
"In addition to targeting specific skills during summer break, it is important to ensure that children are engaged in meaningful activities and that they do not have an excessive amount of down time, which can make the transition back to school an even harder one," continued Orellana.
Every activity is designed to increase the ability of each child and strengthen speech, language, communication, gross and fine motor skills. Classes will be held throughout August for the weeks of August 5th, 12th and 19th, 3 days a week. For more information please visit: spotofmd.com.
