The Church of Scientology Los Angeles Hosts a Human Trafficking Awareness Open House in Honor of International Human Rights Day
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 12, 2014 -- Los Angeles ranks among the top three human trafficking hubs in the United States. It is estimated that 3,000 children are victims of trafficking in Los Angeles County and more than 50 percent of young sex trafficking victims in L.A. are in the child welfare system.
The event featured Lt. Andre Dawson from the Human Trafficking Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department; Sister Ines Telles of the Solidad Enrichment Academy; Barbara Tebyani, Co-President of the LA-Pacific United Nations Association; Irving Sarnoff, Founder and Director of the Friends of the United Nations and Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, President of Youth for Human Rights International.
Lt. Dawson of the LAPD revealed the urgency of countering human trafficking in Los Angeles: “In 10, 20, 30, 40 years, pick whatever number, it is not going to matter how much money you made, how big a house you have, or the clothes you wear, or the nice car that you drove here. No, by you coming to this event hosted by the Church of Scientology, and by the things you will learn from our other distinguished speakers this evening, just know that you can choose to make a difference and save the life of a child.”
The human rights education initiatives United for Human Rights and its sister organization Youth for Human Rights are generously supported by the Church of Scientology. These programs have forged partnerships with nearly 1,000 organizations and government agencies across 80 countries. Through an array of multimedia presentations and public service announcements, they reach more than 100 million individuals every year, raising awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on a global scale.
Inspired by the words of Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard, that “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream,” Scientologists are dedicated to supporting these programs.
