Charleston, South Carolina (PRWEB) November 10, 2015 -- America’s fifth oldest engineering school is more than doubling the graduate programs it offers and now has a facility to accommodate large-scale projects, plus upgraded labs − all complementing an undergraduate program expansion in 2014. At a ribbon-cutting on campus Nov. 7, the Dean of The Citadel School of Engineering announced three new graduate degrees, and 10 new graduate certificates, as he officially opened a new fabrication shop plus five upgraded lab classrooms.

The expansion of programs being offered by The Citadel School of Engineering means more engineers who are trained to the highest professional and ethical standards to support South Carolina’s burgeoning industries

“The expansion of programs being offered by The Citadel School of Engineering means more and more engineers who are trained to the highest professional and ethical standards will be readily available to support South Carolina’s burgeoning industries,” said Dean Ronald Welch, Ph.D., PE, ASEE Fellow, ASCE Fellow, SAME Fellow, U.S. Army Col. (retired). “The enlargement of facilities where cadets and students can learn means we now have the space and the equipment needed to accommodate our growing population of future engineers.”

The school will expand from one engineering graduate program to four, and from offering three engineering graduate certificates to 13.This comes after the school initiated its third undergraduate engineering degree program, mechanical engineering, in 2014. The military college was the forerunner in engineering education in the state of South Carolina and fifth in the nation; engineering has been a part of the college’s curriculum since its inception in 1842.

The college will now offer:

ENGINEERING MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREES
Civil - New
Electrical - New
Mechanical - New
Project Management* - 2010

ENGINEERING GRADUATE CERTIFICATES
Aeronautical - New
Built Environment and Public Health - New
Composites- New
Computer - New
Geo-technical - New
Manufacturing - New
Mechatronics - New
Power and Energy- New
Structural -New
Transportation - New
Technical Program Management - 2014
Systems Engineering Management - 2011
Technical Project Management - 2006

ENGINEERING BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES
Mechanical Engineering - 2014
Civil Engineering - 1912
Electrical Engineering - 1941

In order to accommodate the growing number of engineering cadets and students, the school constructed the new School of Engineering fabrication shop using $185,000 in state funding allocations. The 1,250 square foot facility will be able to accommodate large-scale projects where prototypes can be designed and assembled. Cadets and students were on hand at the event to demonstrate the new Tormach 4-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine as well as more than a dozen other tools and devices.

“The new fabrication shop and programs are important to so many people,” said Mary Kate Ellis, who is a mechanical engineering major in The Citadel Evening Undergraduate Studies program. “The Citadel is making it possible for many more people like me, who already live and work in the area, to attend one of the country’s best engineering schools right here at home, and in person. We get to know our professors and are able to work with other students in the labs.”

Existing lab classrooms in the School of Engineering’s Grimsley and LeTellier Halls were upgraded recently with new equipment. An autoclave, necessary to process parts and materials requiring exposure to elevated pressure and temperatures, will be purchased with a $250,000 gift through The Citadel Foundation.

“Nationally, civil engineers are in the greatest demand, followed by mechanical and electrical engineers. Our expanded and highly diverse array of programs and certificates meet the expressed needs for a multitude of businesses reaching out for top-notch engineers in many disciplines,” Welch said.

Applications are now being accepted for the new programs, which will begin in the summer and fall of 2016. Citadel engineering graduates are leaders in their field across the Lowcountry and across the nation, with 100 percent of the college’s engineering graduates employed before or within two months of receiving their degrees. The Citadel School of Engineering is ranked consistently among the top 25 undergraduate engineering programs in the nation for institutions where the highest degree is a master’s degree.

The School of Engineering proudly contributes to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) development of hundreds of South Carolina K – 12 students each year through numerous events during Engineering Week which includes the Storm The Citadel Trebuchet competition.

*The Citadel School of Engineering’s Master of Science in Project Management program is one of fewer than 30 project management graduate programs in the nation that has earned accreditation by the Project Management Institute Global Accrediting Center. It is also currently The Citadel Graduate College’s fastest growing program.
