The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery takes Recovery Coaching to a new level
Hartford, CT (PRWEB) June 30, 2015 -- CCAR is pleased to announce its expansion of recovery coaching services that are available through our three Recovery Community Centers in Hartford, Willimantic and Bridgeport. This month, staff member Jim Higgins left his role as Hartford Recovery Community Center Manager to become our first Recovery Coach Manager. He is excited to take on this role of organizing peer recovery support available through CCAR’s volunteer coaches, as well as to enhance the ongoing training, supervision and peer learning that enable coaches to develop good skills. Coaches who wish to gain certification will receive assistance to reach this goal.
The role of recovery coach was first conceived as being the highest level peer support role in CCAR Centers that volunteers could achieve. It was seen as a position in which a recovering person could share his or her own recovery strengths and experiences with someone who is newer in the process. People in recovery typically find their first steps to be so challenging, sometimes even impossible to undertake; and talking with others about how they kept themselves moving forward is often the key that makes the difference.
In 2008, CCAR launched their recovery coach training curriculum that has since gained national attention. This Recovery Coach Academy now trains people who are in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and also trains ‘recovery allies’; people with an understanding and personal experiences with recovery. Recovery coaches provide supportive listening and care, and help people identify their strengths and resources needed to be successful in maintaining their recovery efforts. Coaches assist the person to build their ‘recovery capital’, which are the internal and external resources that make recovery possible. Recovery coaches also serve as advocates, helping recovering people to remove the barriers that get in their way.
CCAR staff are pretty excited about this chance to work with Jim to create a strong foundation for recovery coaching in our three community centers, and volunteers are signing up to become more involved in recovery coaching. We look forward to helping even more people live a life in recovery from addiction.
