The Discovery House Continues Support of Bertrand Elementary School
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) November 11, 2014 -- In continuing support of the educational programs at Reseda’s Bertrand Elementary School, The Discovery House, a drug and alcohol rehab center in Los Angeles, donated $5,000 to upgrade technology on campus. At this time of rapid changes in the world of technology, The Discovery House recognizes the need for schools to have the ability to keep current as they prepare students for the future. This is the third in a series of donations given as part of the ongoing partnership between the school and the rehab center. The technology funds will allow teachers and students to use computer tablets and other newly developed technology to engage students in learning. They also will have access to educational software and online learning tools, including the possibility of video conferencing. All of the enhanced technology will help students realize the importance of communication and their part in a global society.
Tom Whiting, co-founder and executive director of The Discovery House, understands the importance of education from the earliest years. He and his staff are committed to helping students interact with the world around them.
“Technology changes the face of education almost every day,” Whiting said. “These students, even as young as they are in elementary school, need all the experience and training they can get at their level. As they grow, they will need to function in a world that most of us cannot even comprehend. They will be able to engage in business all over the world with ease due to technology, and they will find it necessary to understand other cultures. We are happy to be able to help them along the way.”
The Discovery House has chosen this school partnership as just one avenue of community service. As part of the professional community, the rehab center wants to help create an atmosphere of service and cooperation with other businesses. Additionally the staff at The Discovery House emphasizes the importance of service to its clients. Learning to reach out beyond self is a vital tool of recovery. Once clients have regained physical health and have begun to understand the underlying issues that have contributed to their addictions, they are encouraged to share the tools of successful recovery with others. Eventually, this service to others extends beyond the recovery community to the community at large.
“We believe there is a corollary between education and lifestyle choices,” Whiting said. “We want these students – and all students – to make healthy decisions, which include avoiding addiction to alcohol and drugs.”
