The Discovery House Helping to Brighten Up Downtown Reseda
RESEDA, CA (PRWEB) November 25, 2014 -- As a Double Platinum sponsor of Revitalize Reseda’s holiday lighting project, The Discovery House Drug Treatment Center leads the pack of donors to this annual event, which will place 60 festively lighted decorations throughout a five-mile downtown area. The Discovery House, supports service projects organized by Revitalize Reseda as part of its commitment to community responsibility. In addition to financial support of the holiday lighting project, The Discovery House’s clients will take part in the installation and removal of the decorations.
“The Discovery House always has been very generous with us on projects we work on,” said Nancy Sweeney, president of Revitalize Reseda, a nonprofit organization organized by local volunteers who are committed to enhancing the quality of life in Reseda. “Any financial support they provide goes right back to the community, but equally as important, they make themselves available for anything we need. They have helped us with many projects including toy drives, food banks, the Los Angeles Police Department’s annual “National Night Out,” and community clean-ups. During the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, The Discovery House clients helped set up tents and tarps, and they assisted with souvenir areas. Whatever we decide to do, we just call the troops, and everyone comes out to help. It is a pleasure to work with The Discovery House.”
Because Reseda does not have a Chamber of Commerce or a Business Improvement District, the Revitalize Reseda organization is “the catch-all when anybody wants to get something done,” Sweeney said. Revitalize Reseda works closely with the city council, the city attorney and the Los Angeles Police Department “to tackle issues that will make Reseda a better place to live, work and play.” Among the organization’s accomplishments, many of which have involved help from The Discovery House, are restoration of the city’s recreational center swimming pool, beautification of the central business district, and projects to help increase public safety.
The Discovery House’s participation in service is a key element in the recovery process, and co-founders Tom and McKay Whiting are active proponents of giving back to the community. Improvement of the quality of life for The Discovery House’s clients goes hand-in-hand with improving the quality of life for the neighborhood in which the center is located.
“We want to be responsible co-workers with the people who are making Reseda a welcoming community,” said McKay Whiting. “We also know that an important part of the recovery process is getting out of self-centered thinking and learning the life skills involved in service to others. We enjoy our relationship with Revitalize Reseda and are happy to cooperate with their projects. It’s a win-win process.”
**The Discovery House would like to pay tribute to Nancy Sweeney, who passed away November 23rd, after a long battle with cancer. Nancy was a pillar in the community and an inspiration to us all. She will be dearly missed by The Discovery House, Revitalize Reseda and by the community.
