The Farley Center Gives Top 5 Warning Signs of Addiction to Watch on New Year’s Eve
Williamsburg, VA (PRWEB) December 28, 2013 -- The Farley Center at Williamsburg Place is preparing for the expected spike in patient admissions that occurs this time every year and warns the public to be aware of the emergence of an addictive disorder. The holidays can be a time of stress and celebration but as parties fill the calendar, people often find themselves indulging far more than any other time of year. What's most dangerous is that unsafe behavior may be tolerated, or expected, as companies throw office parties or party hosts over-serve.
New Year’s Eve can be one of the most dangerous times for people in early stages of addiction because after weeks of heavy drinking in December the body may develop cravings. Even as the person is consuming alcohol, there is often a desire to quicken the pace beyond what is normal or healthy for that individual. Coupled with the fact that friends or family may be overindulging themselves, the warning signs will go unnoticed. Even if the night does not end in a trip to the emergency room, it can firmly establish addictive behaviors.
“The effects of holiday drinking can be severe and long-lasting. New Year’s Eve is viewed by some as a ‘Last Hurrah’ before having to commit to a resolution,” cautions Stacey Johnson, LCSW, MBA, Clinical Director of The Farley Center at Williamsburg Place. “If there is any doubt about your alcohol intake it should be taken seriously.”
The Farley Center has issued this guide to help educate the public on common warning signs of addiction. If you witness one or more of these symptoms, we recommend contacting a professional counselor immediately.
