The Fibers of Veterans’ Uniforms Tell the Story of War in Drew Cameron’s “Combat Paper Project” on Exhibit at New Roads from Jan. 6 – Mar. 15, 2014
Santa Monica, California (PRWEB) December 22, 2013 -- New Roads School’s Visual Arts Department will present the “Combat Paper Project,” an exhibition developed by Iraq War veteran Drew Cameron, from January 6 - March 15 in the Capshaw-Spielberg Center for Arts and Educational Justice, located on the New Roads School campus at 3131 Olympic Boulevard.
Since separating from the military in 2006, Cameron has been on a tireless pursuit to investigate his role and responsibilities in the military and warfare, and also to provide a creative space for others to do the same. Through papermaking workshops, he teaches veterans to use their uniforms, worn in service, to create works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into pulp and formed into sheets of paper; and through this transformative process, participants in the Combat Paper reclaim their uniforms as art and express their experiences with the military.
“The story of the fiber, the blood, sweat and tears, the months of hardship and brutal violence are held within those old uniforms. The uniforms often become inhabitants of closets or boxes in the attic. Reshaping that association of subordination, of warfare and service, into something collective and beautiful is our inspiration," said Cameron.
Select pieces from the Combat Paper Project will be on display in the gallery at New Roads School’s Capshaw-Spielberg Center for Arts and Educational Justice (3131 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica 90404) from January 6 – March 15, 2014 (9 am – 5 pm weekdays). Drew Cameron will lead a special gallery talk, discussing his work and the Combat Paper Project March 5, 7 pm.
“It is an honor to show the work of these brave, honest artists and soldiers. This exhibition and workshop are extraordinary opportunities for our students and community to engage in a conversation about the unseen impacts of war, and the role that art plays in our shared human experiences both at war and at peace,” said Marcia Moore, Chair of New Roads Visual Arts Department and Gallery Director.
