The Fitzgerald Residence Co-Sponsors Mission Foundation "Pink Carpet" Event This October
Asheville, North Carolina (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- The Fitzgerald at Grove Park will co-sponsor the Mission Foundation’s October 22nd "Pink Carpet" event. At the event, the independent film on breast cancer, Decoding Annie Parker, will be screened. A question and answer session featuring the real Annie Parker, writer/director Steven Bernstein, and the Mission Health Genetics and Cancer teams, as well as a Hollywood style gala, will follow the premiere.
Decoding Annie Parker tells the important stories of Annie Parker, a breast cancer survivor with a history of the disease in her family, and Dr. Mary-Claire King, played by Academy Award winner Helen Hunt, who discovered the important BRCA1 gene and its connections to breast and ovarian cancer. Directed by Steven Bernstein, who previously worked as cinematographer to acclaimed films Monster and Like Water for Chocolate, the film’s important message comes at a relevant time in breast cancer research, as BRCA1 and other genetic testing has become well-known throughout the media.
General admission to the film is $100, with preferred seating tickets available for $150 each. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to supporting genetics counseling and making testing for the BRCA1 gene available to at-risk women in Western North Carolina. Both the Mission Foundation and The Fitzgerald Asheville NC value this important effort in fighting breast cancer.
"We make important strides every year in the face of breast cancer, and it is our hope with this Pink Carpet movie premiere that we significantly move the needle in the availability of services Mission Health provides to all women, especially those with the BRCA1 gene," said Bruce Thorsen, president of Mission Foundation.
"Our community’s generosity will make BRCA1 gene testing and genetics counseling more available at the Mission’s Fullerton Genetics Center, and that will be a tremendous step forward in continuing to reduce instances of breast cancer in our region. It’s only the beginning of the role genetics research is playing in cancer therapy, right here in Asheville."
