The Growing Relationship Between Sports, Medicine and Technology is Featured in New Issue of Innovation & Technology Today
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- The sports and medical fields have always circled each other when it comes to the potential of the human body to perform and heal. Now, these three multi-billion dollar industries are interacting more than ever, in a way that is advancing medical findings, sports performance and the uses of technology.
This growing relationship, and the constantly breaking news within it, is the theme of the new Fall issue of Innovation & Technology Today, now available on Zinio, Apple Newsstand and direct from the publisher.
The special issue of Innovation & Technology Today focuses on the technology and people behind some of the year's biggest news. This begins with NFL's recent $765 settlement with more than 4,500 plaintiffs, which brings to the forefront new findings in traumatic brain injury and concussions in sports and the military. It continues with how medical centers and sports fitness experts are combining to battle the nation's growing problems with obesity and chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular ailments. One of the connective technologies between the two is medical imaging, which has leapt forward with 3G i-Tesla MRI, 4G imaging, and much more.
"With such issues as traumatic brain injury, concussions, robotics and sports injuries in our headlines every day, we went directly to the sources to learn about the newest developments -- and those on the way," Innovation & Technology Today publisher Charles Warner said. "What we learned is that, instead of seeing the newest treatments or fitness machines as the very latest and most advanced technology, that in many ways, it's just the beginning."
These new practices, treatments and technologies come from cutting-edge innovators in the sports and medical fields. One company has rolled out the latest imaging technology used for MRIs, brain imaging and breast cancer screening. Another innovator in the field is Moffitt Cancer Center, which uses the new da Vinci robotic surgical technology for state-of-the-art cancer procedures.
Also featured are a number of leaders who share their perspectives and their work in exclusive interviews, including:
-- Dr. Joshua Hackel of the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute, the most renowned and advanced sports medicine center in the nation;
-- Dr. Brad Roy of The Summit Medical Fitness Center, the pioneer in uniting sports and medicine for rehabilitation and fitness;
-- John Capurso of Visioneer, the first to put handheld scanners in the hands of medical professionals;
-- Brian Russell of Zephyr Technology Corporation, which produces biometric monitoring technology used by the medical field, U.S. military, elite forces and several professional sports teams;
-- Jeff Mullin of Dynamics Inc., an innovator in next-generation payment devices, discusses the LifeCode™ card – a revolutionary flexible, electronic card – that may give first responders access to an individual's potentially life-saving information; and
-- Jesse Harper of i1 Biometrics, which outfits football players with mouth guards that precisely measure head impact from hits on the field.
"We've advanced the conversation that's building in these fields by sharing our discussions with the prime innovators themselves," Warner said. "When you put it all together, you find a scenario that is very fluid and growing every day. It's never been a more exciting time to be a part of the fitness, sports medicine and medical fields."
