The Hunt for Nazis Begins in Adalbert Lallier’s New Book
QUEBEC (PRWEB) December 10, 2013 -- During the Second World War, author Adalbert Lallier was a forced draftee of the Armies of the Third Reich, and in his tour of duty he bore witness to a terrible atrocity - the murder of seven Jewish prisoners in KZ-Theresienstadt, a concentration camp run by the Waffen-SS. This became the inception of his new novel, I Swear to You, Adolf Hitler, Fealty and Obedience, which depicts the wanton killing, and how the daughter of one of the victims went on the hunt for the killer, raising the question of what “true justice” can be exacted from Nazi war criminals.
The novel spans from Austria and the Soviet Union in the midst of the Second World War, and then to the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, in particular Israel. It follows Klara Lauber, the daughter of one of the murdered Jewish prisoners, as she seeks vengeance on the Nazis who murdered her parent. She is aided by Avi Perez, who is a MOSSAD agent, and together they pursue the war criminal known as Karl-Johann Rainer, a Waffen-SS officer who is guilty of the killings, but who survived the war and assumed a new identity, becoming a renowned builder of the “new, democratic, Germany.” Another antagonist is Lieutenant-Colonel Zeuge, a high ranking SS officer who, post-war, becomes second-in-command of the East German national intelligence agencies. Ultimately, the story pits the elite members of Hitler’s Master Race against the formerly oppressed men and women who fought against the Nazi occupation. Their final battle plays out in the playing field of the Cold War, amidst the rebuilt ruins of nations that remain scarred by conflict.
Through this novel, Lallier explores profound themes of morality, asking if it is possible for a powerful nation to ever be held accountable for the war crimes that its leaders and their henchmen were known to have committed against other nations and a particular race, crimes that ultimately resulted in the Holocaust. It asks how the citizens of this nation will bear the guilt of their society’s action and for how long. It also examines the idea of “just punishment,” and the morality of the victimized parties committing acts of vengeance and retribution to “balance” the scales of justice. Lallier ultimately leaves the reader wondering what, in fact, is the difference between “an eye for an eye” and “retribution.”
Lallier’s novel is a scathing indictment against the neo-Nazi groups and Holocaust deniers who claim that Hitler’s Final Solution was never implemented, and that the German nation bears no guilt whatsoever, a travesty that has resulted because no one has dared to examine the meaning of “a truly just retribution” before. Lallier does examine its meaning, however, and by telling his story, he convinces readers that the Holocaust had really been implemented, and that the most heinous crimes of war criminals truly do deserve just retribution.
