The International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) Announces the Election of New Board Members
Vancouver, Canada (PRWEB) March 31, 2015 -- The International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) is pleased to announce and welcome new members to the Board of Directors. New Board members include Xiaomin Wang, MD, PhD, as Director-at-Large China, and Piper Mullins, MS, as Director at Large Americas. Further, ISBER is thrilled to announce the succession of Brent Schacter, BSc (Med), MD, FRCPC, to the role of President-Elect.
Dr. Brent Schacter, BSc (Med), MD, FRCPC, has been elected as ISBER President-Elect. Dr. Schacter is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Manitoba Medical School. He is the principal investigator on the Canadian Tissue Repository Network (CTRNet) Program Grant from the Institute of Cancer Research-Canadian Institutes of Health Research (ICR-CIHR) since its inception in 2004. As the CEO of a provincial cancer agency (CancerCare Manitoba) and also as CEO of the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies (CAPCA) he had the opportunity to facilitate bringing together a national group of biobankers to formulate and initiate CTRNet after becoming interested in promoting the increasingly important impact of biobanking in advancing biomedical research and improving healthcare. Dr. Schacter is a founding member of the Marble Arch Working Group on Research in Biobanking and continues to be active within that forum. He is an author on over 75 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and has participated in approximately 40 Invited Guest Lectureships. Further, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of Biopreservation and Biobanking since 2010. Dr. Schacter has had extensive participation in ISBER, including as a Committee member, Committee Chair, Working Group member and recipient of two ISBER Special Service Awards. He was elected to the ISBER Director-at-Large Americas role in May 2013.
Xiaomin Wang, MD, PhD, has been elected as ISBER Director-at-Large China. Dr. Wang is a Professor and Director at the Department of Neurobiology, Deputy President of Capital Medical University, Beijing and President of Beijing Institute for Brain Disorders, China. Dr. Wang is a Chief Scientist of National Basic Research Program of China (973 Project), including the pathogenesis, prevention, and therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative disorders. In 2007, he proposed to establish Beijing Biobank of Clinical Resources (BBCR) which was then formally established in 2009 under the leadership of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and he has been serving as the chief scientist since then. Dr. Wang was the President of Beijing Society for Neuroscience and Vice President of the Chinese Society for Neuroscience, and is the President of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences. Dr. Wang is the Editor-in-Chief of Translational Medical Research and Journal of Capital Medical University, and Associate Editor in Chief of Chinese Journal of Neuro-Medicine, Journal of Basic-Clinical Medicine, British Medical Journal (Chinese Edition) and an Editorial Board Member of AJP-Cell.
Piper Mullins, MS, has been elected as ISBER Director-at-Large Americas. Ms. Mullins is the Program Manager at the Pan-Smithsonian Cryo-Initiative. She received her Master’s Degree in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee (UT), where she studied information management and reviewed environmental data sharing practices with the UT/Oak Ridge National Lab node of DataOne. In her early professional career, Ms. Mullins collaborated on the development of the Federal Science Repository Service at Information International Associates and managed the digital repository at the University of Tennessee. As the Program Manager for the Pan-Smithsonian Cryo-Initiative, she oversees the development of the Smithsonian biorepository network to integrate, standardize, and manage information systems and biodiversity cryo-collections. Ms. Mullins has had extensive participation in ISBER, including as a Committee member, Committee Chair, Working Group member, and Working Group Chair.
